The GBAO Permit is a mandatory authorization for entering the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast – the vast region covering the Pamir Highway, Wakhan Valley, and surrounding mountains. Without it, you will be turned back at the GBAO checkpoint. This guide covers everything about the GBAO Permit for 2026.
What Is the GBAO Permit?
The GBAO (Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast) Permit is a special authorization added to your Tajikistan eVisa that allows entry into Tajikistan’s semi-autonomous eastern region. GBAO borders Afghanistan and China, making it a sensitive area requiring special access permission.
The permit is NOT a separate visa – it’s an endorsement added to your eVisa application at evisa.tj. You need BOTH an eVisa AND a GBAO Permit to legally enter the region.
Who Needs the GBAO Permit?
Any foreign national traveling to:
- Pamir Highway (M41) – the entire Tajikistan section
- Khorog (GBAO regional capital)
- Wakhan Valley
- Murghab and surrounding Pamir Plateau
- Yashilkul Lake, Zorkul Lake
- Any area east of Kalai-Khumb in GBAO territory
You do NOT need it for: Fann Mountains (Sughd Oblast), Dushanbe, Khujand, Penjikent.

Critical – NOT Available at the Border
The GBAO Permit CANNOT be purchased or obtained at any border checkpoint or crossing. There is a strictly enforced checkpoint on the road entering GBAO territory. Travelers without a valid permit are turned back – no exceptions. Do not leave this to the last minute.
Pamir Highway – GBAO is Mandatory
The entire Tajikistan section of the Pamir Highway runs through GBAO. Multiple internal checkpoints (Khorog, Murghab, Wakhan junction) check documents. Always carry your printed eVisa showing the GBAO endorsement.
Entering GBAO from Kyrgyzstan
If entering Tajikistan from Kyrgyzstan via the Kyzylart Pass, you need a multiple-entry eVisa with GBAO if you’ve already entered Tajikistan from another direction. See eVisa types for the right choice.
Practical Tips
- Print multiple copies of your eVisa showing the GBAO endorsement
- Photograph your visa document for cloud backup
- Register in Murghab at the police station (guesthouses can assist)
- The permit covers all of GBAO – no sub-region permits needed
